I've been using these bulbs in recessed ceiling fixtures too.At first they were too focused and had a hot spot directly below the fixture, but I took a little white shoe polish and wiped it across the front of the lens.A very thin layer that you can still see through, but enough to defocus the light.I let it dry all the way before installing them to avoid any risk of fire from the shoe polish fumes. The result was the light is much more evenly dispersed and the hot spot from the bulb is gone.Don't know if the manufacturer would approve, but I know its not causing them to retain heat because I can still touch them even after being on for hours and they are still cool. These are great products and my kitchen went from 450 watts of power down to 45.
