Uttermost 21105 Knotted Rattan -Light Hanging Shade, Chai Finish Review

This light hangs above our formal dining room table (fits with our decor in our loft condo).When the light is off, the coloring of the rattan is definitely lighter - I would say more like tan than dark brown.At first I didn't like it and was tempted to take a stain to it.But when you turn it on, it looks a lot more like the picture, and I wasn't sure I wanted it to look a lot darker.I receive a lot of compliments on it, and am very happy with the purchase.But just know that if you really want it darker, then I'd suggest getting the darker color, but I've come to really like the chai color.

Off the bat - Readers need to know that a set like this is *never* going to set your yard awash in tons of free electric light. Manage your expectations and be realistic. A tiny little solar panel cannot power a light big enough to be terribly substantial. That said, I love this set.

LENGTH OF CHARGE

Most days I have used the lights, the panel had decent-but-not-amazing sun. Dusk was just after 5pm, and the lights turned on then via the automatic sensor. I thought the charge would drain much sooner, but the lights lasted until morning, with no loss in intensity. The rechargeable AA batteries are removable - awesome! When they eventually stop holding a full charge, you can drop by Radio Shack and grab a set to replace them. That'll be a while though. The fixtures are plastic, but for $39, who cares.

QUALITY OF LIGHT

This is the best set of solar garden-style lights I have seen. In addition to the great charge, they are brighter. Are the three lights together as bright as a table lamp? No. Are they as bright as my refrigerator bulb? No. Are they bright enough to read by? Yes. Even at about six feet away, I can read comfortably. However, keep in mind, these are not for general illumination. They're more like little spotlights. Designed to shine on a path, fence, or tree. The thing being lit needs to be in the path of the beam. The quality of the light is a little weird - that blueish-white you seen on headlights.

USES

I use the lights in a place where we don't have electric. (Great for a shed, for instance. Or of course, outdoors on paths, fences, plants, trees.) Also, these would be pretty neat for camping! They would be perfect on a porch, driveway, or white fence. (The lighter the color of the thing lit, the more light is reflected.)

ENERGY SAVINGS & EASE OF USE

Let's be clear - You are not going to save a fortune in electricity by using this tiny set of solar lights. Using a 50 watt lamp instead (which is much brighter) would only cost you ten cents to run for twenty hours, even if you pay .10 per kwh on your electric bill.It would take about two years of nighttime use to make your $39 back here. However, if you are using a battery lantern regularly, you'll quickly rack up battery savings. I like them because they can stand alone, without wiring or a bunch of expensive D cells. Point the panel toward the sun and plug in the lights.

CONCLUSION

Great reflector, better longer-lasting charge than any I have ever seen on a solar set. Love the fact that the rechargeable batteries can be replaced. Decent output. Light is a little blueish-white and weird. But I think they are pretty terrific for $39.

Sentura Vanity Light in Brushed Nickel Review

I bought a 10-year-old house a few years' back that still had the original low-end fixtures installed. Slowly and steadily I've been replacing the lighting throughout, so I've become somewhat experienced in their installation.
I purchased this product from LightingShowplace, and it arrived quickly in a well-packed box. I sat down to do the prep work prior to installing - but - it was already done! Don't expect the plastic bag jammed with dozens of parts, they are already on the fixture. The wiring was set up for easy final install including use of electrical tape to secure the wire nuts, a safety measure I do also. Nice.
Glass elements have a nice marbling that isn't very apparent in the picture where it is unlit. This is a well-made classy fixture.

I'm a lighting expert and electrical engineer. These lights are nice and bright without glare. I use four of these to light up my four bay garage. .Despite these being high-bay, these are hung about 17 feet above the slab about 10 feet apart to cast a nice even glare-free light.I rewired the four for 240V service and used 12 AWG Type NM cable fed from a 20A branch. I use a 1X4 matrix of four double-pole switches to control the lights.Although one of the lights arrived damage due to shipping, the company responded real quick to send a new replacement. I'm real happy with the quality and price of these lights. After much research and playing with isocandela diagrams for many manufacturers, I set on these lights as the best, and the next better performer (marginal improvement) would have cost me more than double.So these lights reflect the best bang for the buck.

I've looked at several types of LED light strips and this is the product I found most suitable to be used for under cabinet kitchen lighting.First of all these really are adequately bright (many LED strips look bright in the picture but aren't).

These have warm light (2700K) which is what I found to be the best color temperature.3000K is common for white LEDs, but they have no warmth. Though 2700K rated fixtures tend to also be rated with less lumens, these are still bright.The only downside is that they are very expensive, but the quality of construction is good.Nice plastic lens that help to disperse the light. Lens is built into an aluminum profile.LED lights run cool which is why I prefer them over xenon lights (though xenon are cheaper and tend to produce more light).Some LED under counter lights have less number of LEDs which will also more distinct shadows (fluorescent light is ideal in this regard, of course, which is completely flat).

Be aware that the daisy-chain cables and the 12V power adapter are a little pricey.The power adapter will power two 6-LED strips or one 12-LED strip. If you are handy, you can use a power distribution for CCTV which will provide adequate power and cost less if you are putting up several of these in a kitchen.The plugs are harder to find, but you can get compatible ones [...].Part no. A25654-ND (MATE-N-LOK2 connector plug), A28814-ND (MATE-N-LOK2 connector socket 16 AWG tin crimp). (Alternately, mfg part no. 794184-1 and 794231-1, TYCO electronics). Requires using crimping tool.

American Fluorescent PWYS118RECT One-Light 18-Watt 13-Inch, Wyoming Sconce, Cold River Rust Finish Light Fixture Review

I installed one of these in my bathroom -- the electrical box is directly over a surface-mount medicine cabinet and I was having trouble finding a fixture with a deep enough mounting bracket so that the light would project over the cabinet instead of just shining on the top of it.This one works quite well in that location.It's not obvious from the photo, but the bottom of the diffuser is completely enclosed, not open like a bell.This means the light diffuses through the whole tube rather than being focused out the bottom.The single bulb (pin-type fluorescent) emits plenty of light for a small bathroom.

Watch out for loose mounting hardware in the box when you unpack it.I thought it was missing some washers until I searched through all the packing material again.

Moreover, it has an attractive, contemporary look that makes it more like a piece of art adding to its overall value.The light works best when mounted fairly high up, since it gives off heat and can therefore be somewhat uncomfortable to stand directly underneath for a taller person.As an average sized woman, this isn't a concern for me, but some tall guests have commented on this aspect of the light. Additionally,if the light is mounted on a lower ceiling, the light source comes from behind rather than from straight down, creating shadows.I have the light mounted in my kitchen, and reading a cookbook can sometimes be a problem as a result. 45 LED 5w Par 38 Floodlights, works with most motion detector fixtures Review

I've been using these bulbs in recessed ceiling fixtures too.At first they were too focused and had a hot spot directly below the fixture, but I took a little white shoe polish and wiped it across the front of the lens.A very thin layer that you can still see through, but enough to defocus the light.I let it dry all the way before installing them to avoid any risk of fire from the shoe polish fumes.The result was the light is much more evenly dispersed and the hot spot from the bulb is gone.Don't know if the manufacturer would approve, but I know its not causing them to retain heat because I can still touch them even after being on for hours and they are still cool.These are great products and my kitchen went from 450 watts of power down to 45.

It really does look as nice as the photo and it is made of real stained glass pieces.Seems sturdy and well-made, and is packed securely in a thick formed styrofoam shell with foam rubber cushioning.In fact there were two serious gouges in the cardboard box that didn't make it anywhere near the glass.But there is one thing to be aware of, if you want to use compact fluorescent lamps, forget it.The sockets are the small christmas type, not standard light bulb size.They will take bulbs up to 60 watts, so it should be pretty bright, but you won't be able to save energy until somebody comes out with energy saving lamps that fit the smaller sockets.Hopefully someday soon 120V LED array lights will be available in small sockets.

If this light did not include a photocell I would give it five stars. It is well constructed and looks fine.

The problem with this light is that its photocell does not allow the use of compact florescent light bulbs. This is a major design flaw in a lamp designed to run approximately 10 hours/day and certainly the manufacturer should warn buyers of this deficiency.

Its low quality circuitry causes compact florescent bulbs to flicker and burn out in less than 24 hours. The instructions do not warn the unsuspecting buyer of this problem.

The operating cost of this lamp is about $36/year using a 100w incandescent bulb vs. $9/year using a compact florescent bulb (assuming $.10/kwh and 10 hours/day). Over 10 years this lamp will cost an extra $270 (approximately) to operate with incandescent bulbs verses one that uses compact florescent bulbs.

My solution was to replace the photocell with a higher quality one that switches on/off (cost $12 at Lowes). This solution required drilling a larger hole in the light. Another option is to purchase a light with a motion sensor that has a dusk to dawn feature. The dusk to dawn feature deactivates the motion sensor and make is behave like a light with a photocell.

I just installed this chandelier in my new home -- it is stunning!

For my dining room, I wanted something that had a bit of "bling," but not *too* much.This turned out to be the perfect choice.It is so much prettier in person than on the screen.

The dimensions are 29" wide by 35.5" tall -- that info isn't offered in the product description.It's just the right size for my 54" round dining table.

Take a look at the close up view if you haven't already.The glass sections in the center are etched with an arched "cathedral window" pattern that is repeated in the bobeches at the base of the "candles."Really nice touch, that.

The crystals and the glass sections have a very pale almost imperceptible"amber" coloration, which combined with the beige shades and mottled tortoise shell hued metal structure contributes to this chandelier's feeling of warmth.

Amazon's price is excellent, too.I shopped around, both online and off, and this was the best deal.

It's always hard to tell exactly how something will look when you see it on the screen; sometimes you just have to use your imagination and go for it.This one worked out great -- I couldn't be happier.

I bought this lamp to cut the gloom under the corner shelf over my computer monitor at my desk. I was worried that the LED light would wind up being a harsh, distracting bluish glare, but this lamp gives off very pleasing, warm light, more pleasant even than the built-in fluorescent lamp at my desk. Now I can put family photos on the wall under my shelf and enjoy them.

The light is not quite as bright as I thought it would be - more of an "accent." I had been hoping I could light the entire area under the corner shelf with a single unit, but I'll need a second one for the left side. The pair of them will work very nicely, though.

The shape and light weight of the tube permits simple and flexible positioning with just a couple of dots of velcro. The cord is long enough to make aesthetically-pleasing routing easy.

A very nice design from GE.

Sea Gull Lighting 66330-825 3-Light Warwick Pendant and Billiard Light, Smoky Parchment Glass Shades and Vintage Bronze Review

The light looks exactly like the picture - it's a classy/antique-looking light with 3 glass domes directed downward.It came with A LOT of chain, one of which was pre-threaded with the power line.The dimensions were what I was expecting, so they're probably accurate as listed.Assembly and installation was about what I expected - no major surprises.It came with all necessary hardware.

I bought this light to hang over an 8 foot pool table, and it works nicely for that purpose.I have no regrets in selecting this style of light (versus a more traditional pool table light).

Some minor issues:
* When fully tightened to the metal part of the fixture, the globes do not point straight down - they're a tiny bit cock-eyed.You probably wouldn't notice this if it were above your head, but mine is at eye level (since it's about 3 feet over the pool table).I left them a little loose to compensate, and it's not so bad.If I were more daring, I'd try to bend the fixture so they were exactly right.
* The chain links are EXTREMELY firm, and you have to bend them open to assemble the fixture.Their strength is a good thing for holding the light up, but it makes it very difficult to install - especially without scratching the finish on the chain link.(You have to do this 4 times, by the way - 2 chains, two links each for the top and bottom.)It would have been nice if they'd included 4 links already opened so you just had to slip them on and squeeze them shut with your pliers.I tried wrapping some plastic around each of the 2 pairs of pliers you're supposed to use, but that was largely ineffective in protecting the finish.Instead, I suggest wrapping the links in several layers of electrical tape before prying them open.
* The dark rings at the bottom of the glass globes are thin metal rings that just sit on the lip of the globe.It looks fine, but feels a bit cheap when you're installing it or look very closely at the fixture.
* While I think Sea Gull is a US company, the light is made in China.A shame - I'd have been willing to pay more for one made in the USA.

That said, I'm pleased with the light overall and am glad I purchased it.The above issues are minor enough that they probably shouldn't dissuade you from buying if you like the look of the fixture.The classy look, long chain (if needed - I didn't), and reasonably straight forward installation make it a worthwhile choice.

Final Note: In case it's not obvious - You will need to install this is an electrical box.The one I installed (before finishing the ceiling) was rated for a ceiling fan.This fixture isn't all that heavy (10 pounds, maybe?), but you won't be able to put it up without something there to hold the standard bracket and strong enough to carry the weight.

Kenroy Home 20620NUT Diploma Wallchiere Nutmeg finish With Vintage Scavo Glass Shade Review

This is the second wallchiere from Kenroy that I have purchased.They are also relatively easy to hang/install, but it is helpful to have two people during the install...it's a bit more difficult with just one person.I love the fact that I can hang them on the wall and plug them in, but I don't have to use valuable floor and/or table space.Plus, they provide just the right amount of ambient lighting.Plenty of light to see, but not too bright.It looks like a beautiful wall decoration, but it also serves a great purpose.Plus, I rent, so when I move, I can take it with me!
