Its main attribute is that it's absolutely beautiful.Really, it is.
Some considerations:
1.It is only a 3 star design. The decorative screw on mount that holds the globe in place is actually NOT intended to be load bearing (like just about everyone might expect).Meaning read the instructions carefully. There is actually separate hardware that MUST be used that keeps the globe from falling. You can use the decorative mount as a method of securing the globe, but there's no telling how long it would stay.We had a contractor install these for us (who apparently did not read the directions and left out the extra securing nut) and after the globe heated up a little, it fell and crashed into a million pieces. We have 2 small kids, so this was upsetting. So I bought another one and installed it myself, after carefully reading the directions.Alas, I also discovered the "installers" had not grounded the fixture either.
2.Due to its size, it doesn't handle heat well.It has 2 bulb ports, each being rated at a max. of 40 W.Do NOT exceed this rating. The unit warns there is risk of fire damage if you do.And based on what I've seen, the warning is correct.I only use 1 compact fluorescent bulb in each of these fixtures, and leave the other bulb port vacant. If you are buying this design of fixture, you aren't looking for blinding brightness. The bulb I am using puts out just the right amount of light (maybe more than ideal) and is only pulling about 4 watts.AND the CF bulbs run quite cool with very little heat produced as compared with standard filament based bulbs.I personally would be scared to run a standard filament based 40 W bulb in this fixture.
So to sum up, if you follow the directions, install the unit correctly, and don't overpower it with wattage, it really is a great little fixture. They're made in China , of course, which I didn't realize until they arrived.(BIG negative IMO)And the overall design is definitely 3 stars, maybe less. But the beauty bumps it up to 4 stars. These fixtures ARE NOT a risk if directions are followed on install. But if you've hired someone to do it and they think they already know how these things work, point out the install diagram to them so they can make sure and get the globe securing nut in place before adding the decorative screw on mount.
